Here are ten key tips to get you started for a healthier lifestyle:

1. Eat a healthy breakfast every morning - fresh fruit, steel cut oats, whole grain bread, egg whites, low-fat plain yogurt, and whole grain/low-sugar cereals will provide the energy you need to start your day and will prevent you from overeating at lunch.
2. Eat vegetables and fruits with your meals - eat a variety of vegetables with lunch and dinner and fruit at least twice per day.
3. Eat lean proteins - such as chicken, turkey, fish, egg whites, and tofu in moderation.
4. Eat whole grains rather than refined carbohydrates - whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, brown rice, steel cut oats, quinoa, millet, barley, and buckwheat should replace white bread, white flour, white pasta and white rice.
5. Eat some sources of essential fats every day - these include oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herrings and trout), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, almonds and avocadoes. Avoid processed fats such as low fat spreads and margarines.
6. Cook from scratch whenever possible - buy whole, natural ingredients and cook or prepare them yourself. Avoid processed and packaged foods as much as possible.
7. Avoid sugar - found in cookies, cakes, candy, desserts, soft drinks, and many other foods. If you must add a sweetener, try these alternatives: Rapadura's Whole Organic Sugar or Agave Nectar.
8. Avoid artificial additives - these may be sweeteners (high fructose corn syrup), preservatives (nitrates and nitrites, sodium benzoate and propionic acid), colorings (blue 1 and blue 2, red 3, and yellow 6), or flavorings (natural flavorings).
9. Avoid stimulants -caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and other recreational drugs.
10. Avoid processed meats -ham, salami, chorizo, hot dogs, bacon and any smoked or cured meats. These all contain nitrates that have been linked to stomach cancer and are high in saturated fats and salt which are linked to cardiovascular disease.
